Joni Mitchell Celebrates American Citizenship Milestone
Renowned Canadian artist and folk singer Joni Mitchell has officially become an American citizen, marking a significant milestone in her life over sixty years after leaving her native Canada. Mitchell, who turns 83 next month, shared the achievement with her fans on Instagram, posting a photo from Tuesday's naturalization ceremony and calling it “A journey that began 62 years ago.”
Naturalization Ceremony Shared with Fans
Mitchell’s Instagram post showed her holding a U.S. flag, smiling in a red beret and sunglasses, with extra stars and stripes pinned to her cardigan lapel. In addition to the photo, she shared a short video clip from the event, where she uses a walking stick and receives an enthusiastic round of applause from others in the room. The moment was celebrated by her more than 1 million Instagram followers.
Journey from Canada to the U.S.
Born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada, in 1943, Mitchell began her career after studying commercial art in Alberta. She moved to Toronto in 1964, performing in local folk clubs before briefly moving to Detroit during her marriage to folk singer Chuck Mitchell. Later, she relocated to New York City where she released her first album, known as “Song to a Seagull.” Finally, she settled in Los Angeles, living in the city's famous Laurel Canyon neighborhood before moving to Bel Air.
Music Career and Achievements
With 19 studio albums and six live records to her name, Mitchell is celebrated for her influential work in music, particularly in the 1970s. Her acclaimed hits include “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Blue,” “Amelia,” and “Woodstock.” She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards in 2002. Most recently, she won the Grammy for Best Folk Album for her 2023 release, “Joni Mitchell at Newport,” and was honored at the 2024 Grammys and with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Junos, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards.
Dual Citizenship and Continued Canadian Ties
Both the United States and Canada permit dual citizenship, allowing Mitchell to retain her Canadian passport while holding American citizenship. The reason for the timing of her decision remains unclear, especially amid currently strained relations between the two countries. In the past, Mitchell made public remarks about voting in U.S. elections, referring to herself as a “lousy immigrant.”
Health and Ongoing Projects
Despite facing serious health challenges in recent years, including a stroke and a brain aneurysm in 2015, Mitchell has remained active in music and public life. A biopic about her life is reportedly in development, with Cameron Crowe listed as the director and Meryl Streep expected to play the title role, according to IMDb.
