Jurassic World Rebirth: A Fresh Start with Familiar Horrors

Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth. Starring Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, Rebirth hits theaters over the Fourth of July weekend, July 2, 2025, but this is hardly the last Jurassic World entry we’ll see in the theaters in 2025. Jurassic World Rebirth bills itself as the franchise reboot, though it still starts in familiar territory.

The fourth film in the Jurassic World series and seventh film overall, Jurassic World Rebirth, follows a team sent to the tropics to collect genetic samples from dinosaurs. These samples are connected to the creation of a new, life-saving drug, but the heist is derailed by an unexpected boating family that comes across a pod of aquatic dinosaurs. The survivors of that attack then have to deal with another surprise: the island they’ve taken refuge on was home to a secret research lab for Jurassic Park.

Spoilers for the Jurassic World: Rebirth Official Trailer

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the Earth’s ecosystem is inhospitable to dinosaurs, and the survivors have been pushed into restricted equatorial refugia where temperatures and vegetation are more like what dinosaurs were used to. The three remaining dinosaurs are the largest on land, sea, and sky, each of which is a host to a rare strand of DNA used to engineer a new, life-saving drug. Scarlett Johansson’s Zora Bennett is called in to lead a team of covert operatives on a top-secret mission to extract the DNA. This mission is disrupted when they encounter a civilian family whose boating excursion has been derailed by the attack of an aquatic dinosaur pod. The survivors from this attack take refuge on an island that is soon revealed to be a long-abandoned secret research facility of the Jurassic Park project. If that’s not a twist enough, the trailer teases that the island’s secrets could be darker than the dinosaurs themselves.

Cast

In addition to Johansson and Ali, the film stars Rupert Friend as Martin Krebs, a pharmaceutical representative with “his ideas about the project’s mission”; Jonathan Bailey as paleontologist Henry Loomis; and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked family. Reuben’s children, played by Luna Blaise, David Iacano, Audrina Miranda, and Bechir Sylvain, are members of the covert mission team. Ed Skrein and Philippine Velge play undisclosed roles.

Analysis of Jurassic World: Rebirth Trailer

Most of the footage shown in this trailer is recycled from a first trailer that was released in February, but the new trailer still does a good job of summing up Rebirth’s plot and selling its main set pieces. It opens with a lab sequence, featuring a worker in a hazmat suit, who is somehow trapped in an enclosure with a hungry T Rex. He calls for help, but it’s already too late. After that, the action picks up as it does in most trailers: we see one or two action-packed sequences that capture the tone and energy of what to expect from the feature.

Aside from Johansson and Ali’s face-off with a T-Rex, Jurassic World: Rebirth’s trailer spoils a few other big set pieces as well. The film includes an attempted heist of a pterosaur egg, “the largest flying animal ever known,” which one character describes as “basically a flying carnivore the size of an F-16.” As expected, Jurassic World: Rebirth also features the venerable raptors, as well as a mysterious new ocean predator: the mosasaur. Judging from dialogue in the trailer, this island has been purposefully utilized to house “the worst of the worst”—the nastiest, most dangerous, and volatile dinosaurs from the collection.

It remains to be seen how much of a fresh start this entry is, despite the reboot tag. While it may be hard to call the entire franchise back to its Jurassic Park roots, one important part of that is going back to the original research island, which the trailer purposefully shows. The trailer also suggests that there are new threats, which we can hope are the unpredictable factor that a reboot needs. How well that works remains to be seen.

What we do know, however, is that the film is still featuring many of the beloved characteristics that the Jurassic World series is known for: a band of elite specialists, high-concept science with deep moral quandaries, and, of course, dinosaurs.

Jurassic World Rebirth Trailer Clips

After a prologue sequence, the trailer shows many of the action scenes we can expect from the film. In one sequence, Johansson appears to be hiding in the flooded remains of a research building as a carnivorous dinosaur pounds on the windows and walls. In another, Johansson is cornered by a large predator while she attempts to escape by scaling down a rock face. The trailer also shows several crowd-pleasing escape sequences as well, where characters must run for their lives through dense jungles and lush tropical plant life.

Scarlett Johansson is no stranger to the more tactical side of action, and as we’ve seen in this trailer, she has the opportunity to bring that to Jurassic World as well. Will she be able to reinvent the wheel or at least part of it? Will dinosaur DNA lead to new medical treatments, and will the originals, like Sam Neil’s Alan Grant and Laura Dern’s Ellie Sattler, make a comeback? We may have to wait a few more months for some of these questions to be answered, but one thing’s for sure: Jurassic World Rebirth has the right recipe for dinosaur flick success.

Jurassic World Rebirth opens in theaters across the country on July 2, 2025.
