Bixby Outreach Center Faces Growing Need During Holiday Season
The Bixby Outreach Center is preparing to support more families than ever before as the holiday season approaches. Rising costs of living are prompting an increasing number of individuals, particularly those on fixed incomes, to seek help from the local nonprofit’s food pantry services.
Rising Costs Hit Fixed-Income Residents Hard
Julie Prox, Executive Director of the Bixby Outreach Center, explained that food pantries across the country are experiencing greater demand, with Bixby being no exception. "Incomes aren't keeping up with the cost of living, and we're seeing more people seeking out just assistance with food," Prox told 2 News.
The center is witnessing a pronounced impact on elderly residents, who are especially vulnerable when dealing with unexpected financial strains.
Elderly Assistance and the Impact of Utility Costs
Prox emphasized that even modest increases in monthly expenses can make a significant difference for seniors living on limited budgets. "If they have a certain amount each month and then their utility bill went up $50 or $100, that hurts," she said. "We're seeing a lot more elderly folks coming through the door, which breaks your heart."
Preparing for Increased Demand This Year
The need for food assistance is expected to surge during the upcoming holiday season. Last year, the center helped 788 families in need. This year, the Bixby Outreach Center anticipates supporting between 900 and 1,000 families, underscoring the urgency for additional resources and support.
Blue Jeans Ball: A Critical Fundraiser Event
The annual Blue Jeans Ball, scheduled for November 7, has become the nonprofit’s largest fundraiser and a crucial source of funding for the coming year. "That really does fund our programs for the next year. That's how we build our budget is off this program," Prox noted. The event not only raises money but also helps the community understand the food pantry’s operations and the depth of local food insecurity.
Volunteer Julie Nold highlighted the communal spirit of the fundraiser. "It's just fun because the community gets to be invited in to really see what we do. Because if you've not been here, you really don't know what all goes on and what the need is," Nold said. She encouraged locals looking for ways to give back to consider volunteering with the Bixby Outreach Center.
Continuing the Mission of Community Support
As the Center braces for an increase in families seeking holiday support, Prox emphasized the importance of the Blue Jeans Ball to the organization's mission. "We just want to be able to be here to serve our community and keep our doors open, and the Blue Jeans Ball is what helps make that happen," she said.
