The Florence County Sheriff’s Office found the teen’s body on First Neck Road on June 24. Wright had been shot multiple times. The road where the shooting victim was found is located about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, the sheriff’s office arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, who authorities say fired the shots after an argument with the victim escalated.

The sheriff’s office said Raper did not act alone and, in the days and weeks after Wright’s death, made new arrests as the investigation continued. Officials say that a group of several teenagers lured the shooting victim to the scene where Raper was waiting, and knew that he was armed and had made prior threats against the victim.

Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital that court proceedings have only served to increase her sorrow. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”

The victim’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach, was among those arrested in connection with the case. Officials said that she had helped lure the victim to the scene of the shooting, in what prosecutors described as her attempt to work out a dispute with Wright. She has been charged as an accessory before the fact, accused of driving Raper to the scene of the crime despite knowing that he was armed and that a shooting was likely to take place.

Prosecutors Charge Teens as Adults

Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office told WBTW-TV that the various suspects had all played a role in setting up the shooting and, though their involvement was different, were all complicit in what occurred. “They were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” Nunn said. “They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.”

Under South Carolina law, prosecutors have discretion to charge teens as adults for crimes such as murder. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that five of the nine suspects are being prosecuted as adults.

“The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” Nunn said.

Three other teens in the Myrtle Beach area were later charged with murder in addition to Raper. Those teens were identified as 18-year-old Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso, and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns. Prosecutors have said that their roles in the case were different than the others and that the charges reflect what they are believed to have known and done before the murder.

Sheriff T.J. Joye told reporters that the shooting had its origin in a feud over a woman. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” he said. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”

She says that, as court hearings continue, she has found it difficult to cope with the loss of her son. Her sense of grief has only deepened in recent weeks, in part because her son’s girlfriend was one of those arrested in the case. She also says that she is among many in the community who are shocked by the fact that a group of teenagers could have helped orchestrate the situation and the shooting.
