New Ballerina Trailer Puts Eve Macarro in the Crosshairs

Set to premiere in theaters in three weeks, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is the Ana de Armas–led spin-off we’ve all been waiting for. The latest franchise entry from Lionsgate is another action flick in the John Wick world that fans of the original films will recognize, but with one big difference: It’s starring a young assassin named Eve, played by de Armas. On June 6, 2025, we’ll finally get to see if it works.

In the weeks leading up to Ballerina’s release, Lionsgate has released several previews of the film, including an “official international trailer” in March 2025. Each successive clip has become more fun and exciting to watch, until today’s final trailer is just as slick, violent, and visceral as we could have hoped for.

In terms of story, Ballerina‘s timeline takes place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which was released back in 2019. That film followed Keanu Reeves’ eponymous character, John Wick, as he was named an “excommunicado” by the High Table of the Continental for killing crime lord Santino D’Antonio in the Hotel Continental. As a result, he had a multi-million-dollar bounty placed on his head and had to flee across New York City to find help. He eventually made his way to the headquarters of the Ruska Roma crime organization.

In the spin-off, Ballerina, the Ruska Roma’s director (played by Anjelica Huston) appears as a character once more. In Parabellum, Huston’s character was the mysterious head of the Ruska Roma organization that Wick visited. The organization sheltered the former hitman, and its Ruska Roma branch was also a place of brutal training for young women. These “director’s protégés” were not just dancers — they were ballerina-assassins. In one small scene in Parabellum, the camera catches a young ballerina, played by Unity Phelan, on stage, rehearsing.

In Ballerina, that character (Eve Macarro) is front and center, as Ana de Armas takes the role of Eve, a young assassin who, like John Wick, has a vendetta to settle in this violent underworld. In a slate of other returning actors, Ian McShane is back as Winston, the Continental’s manager, and the late Lance Reddick, who passed away in March 2023, returns to the John Wick world one last time as Charon, the manager of the Continental’s concierge services. Sharon Duncan-Brewster also plays Eve’s mentor Nogi in the film.

Gabriel Byrne stars as the main villain, the Chancellor, who uses his political power to have an entire town come after Eve. Norman Reedus also plays a character named Daniel Pine, and there are two other performers, Catalina Sandino Moreno and David Castañeda, who are also on the cast list, though there is no word on who they play.

A Story of Vengeance with the Signature Wick Flair

The first trailer for Ballerina landed in September of 2024 and dives deep into Eve’s backstory. It’s revealed in this first look that Eve lost both of her parents at a young age and quickly got swept up by the Ruska Roma to hunt down the man who killed her father. The footage shown during this early preview plays on the emotional backstory of this young assassin, though it was noted that very little John Wick shows up in the story.

The second trailer, which was released in March 2025, actually gave fans more of what they wanted, even though it showed little in terms of the story. There was a beautifully snowy showdown between Wick and Eve, set in an eerily lit basement bar, and it teased the screen time that these two may have together. However, most of what was shown in the second official trailer was clips that were already shown in the first one.

The latest and final trailer for the film begins on a stark note — a photo of Eve gazing into the distance while someone is at full attention with a gun trained on her. From that first shot, the clips roll and re-roll, old and new combined to give the best and final feel for the film. All of the old footage is from the first official trailer, but that’s OK because it’s interspersed with new footage.

The short montage kicks into high gear and is full of choreographed gunfights, hand-to-hand combat, and a new Ana de Armas proving that she can not only hold her own but that she can do justice to the legacy of John Wick. These scenes, with close-ups of her driving swords into her enemies, are made all the more brutal by the clipped line that echoes in the background: “This isn’t done until they’re dead.” This is a line that speaks to not only her character but to the entire world and mythos of the Wick franchise.
