Strange New Worlds S3 to Feature Mystery and Comedy Episodes

Paramount+ has released the first official trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The trailer, released Friday, August 9, gives fans a first look at what they can expect when season three premieres on July 17, 2025.

Season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds came to a close on a massive cliffhanger last year, as the Gorn invaders of a Federation colony world launched a surprise attack against the U.S.S. Enterprise. The crew was able to successfully fend off the attack, but not before several crew members were taken hostage along with the other survivors.

Left with no other option, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) was forced to choose between following orders and standing down or defying Starfleet command and leading a rescue mission. Pike, of course, chooses the latter, creating the sequel hook when the season two finale concluded. This conflict and drama against the Gorn will continue into the start of the third season, and the new trailer from Paramount+ shows that exact continuation from the end of the last season.

Fans were given an initial small glimpse of this when footage from the start of the upcoming season was shown during October’s New York City Comic-Con. Showcasing a continuation from the season two finale, the clip shows the crew of the Enterprise engaging in a tense space battle against the Gorn, one of the series’ trademarked action sequences. The new trailer continues this line, building on the established conflict and conflict drama to show viewers the next step in this overarching battle.

The trailer goes on to tease several new adventures, mysteries, and conflicts that will crop up in the series. While the Gorn storyline will be brought to a conclusion, the crew of the Enterprise will soon face a new threat from a new, formidable villain who will stretch the crew’s abilities and force them to question their resolve, loyalty, and commitment. Expanding the storytelling, season three will include several episodes that feature themes of faith, dedication, romance, comedy, and even some mystery, according to Paramount+.

Viewers will also see some variance in genre, ones “not typically found” in previous Star Trek series. The April teaser for season three leaned heavily into this, teasing standalone episodes and side-stories within the mix of the more traditional adventure storylines, such as space battles, serialized drama, character exploration, and even time travel.

Season three will continue to be led by the returning main and recurring cast members as they pick up right where they left off from the cliffhanger season two finale. One of the most exciting additions for season three is British actor Cillian O’Sullivan, who will be joining the crew as Dr. Roger Korby. A legacy character from Star Trek: The Original Series, Korby was first portrayed by Michael Strong during the series’ run and was a doctor and archaeologist on the U.S.S. Enterprise.

In the Strange New Worlds timeline, Korby is a distinguished archaeologist who focuses on medical archaeology and the long-missing fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). Korby will appear throughout the entire third season, and his unexpected arrival on the Enterprise will no doubt create conflict among the crew, particularly Chapel, who he once courted, and who has since found romantic happiness with Spock (Ethan Peck).

Season three will also include special guest stars from Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, both comedians well-known for their contributions to film and television over the last two decades. The April teaser trailer leaned heavily into this, teasing standalone episodes and side-stories within the mix of the more traditional adventure storylines, such as space battles, serialized drama, character exploration, and even time travel.

In an endearing moment, the trailer features a brief scene with James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) sitting in the captain’s chair. The context for this scene is not clear, but his presence in that moment suggests that he will be joining the rest of the crew in the fight against this Gorn threat, or at least, on the bridge of the Enterprise.

His time spent in that chair is probably going to be brief, but he will at least be able to say that he’s sat in the chair like his legendary predecessor. Kirk’s time in the captain’s chair in the trailer scene ends with Pike giving the young man some parting advice: “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”

The trailer ends with another special moment shared between Spock and Oswalt’s Vulcan, who receives a demonstration of a “high five” from Spock, first succeeding at it, and then quickly after, when he’s asked to go “down low” doing the traditional “too slow” maneuver. The reaction from the other Vulcan is instant: “Why would you do that?” The follow-up, of course, is classic Spock: “Because you are too slow.”

Premiere Date and Release Schedule

Season three of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will debut on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 17, 2025. From there, new episodes will be released weekly on Thursday until the final episode of the season on September 11, 2025.

Season four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been officially ordered, so that’s the next thing that fans should look forward to. With its serialization, character-focused storytelling, and visual style, Strange New Worlds has struck a chord with both longtime fans of the franchise and new viewers who are just discovering Star Trek for the first time.
