Arrests Made in Oklahoma City Burglary Investigation

Oklahoma City Police have arrested three men from Houston, Texas, as part of a burglary investigation that highlights growing concerns over organized crime activities targeting Oklahoma residents. The suspects are believed to have connections to the 'Money Market Street Gang,' a group reportedly active in illicit operations across states.

‘Jugging’ Crime Tactic Targets Bank Customers

The incident under investigation involves a crime known as “jugging.” According to police, this tactic consists of suspects monitoring bank customers and identifying those withdrawing cash. The suspects then follow their targets and, at an opportune moment, break into their vehicles to steal the money.

Benjamin Weir, public information officer for the Oklahoma City Police Department, described the method: “Whenever they see somebody come walking out of a bank holding a money envelope, something like that, that’s then an indicator of there’s likely going to be money in the car.”

Case Details: Surveillance Footage and Police Investigation

According to police documents, the victim, identified as “Medrano,” withdrew money at the Bank of Oklahoma on Western Avenue, unaware that he was being watched. After leaving the bank, Medrano drove a mile to a nearby Lowe’s store. Surveillance footage shows a Jeep backing into a parking space next to Medrano’s vehicle, followed by a passenger exiting the Jeep, briefly standing between the vehicles, and quickly returning to the Jeep before driving away.

Upon returning from Lowe’s, Medrano found his car window smashed and his money stolen, a crime in line with recent jugging trends.

Technology Aids in Tracking Down Suspects

B. Weir credited several technologies in helping advance the burglary investigation, including CCTV cameras and automatic license plate readers. "We utilized our CCTV cameras, some of our automatic license plate reader technology to identify not only what vehicle we were looking for, but where that vehicle may be," he explained.

Police tracked the Jeep involved, followed the suspect, and conducted a traffic stop once a driving mistake was observed. Officers recovered cash, a ski mask, and a tool believed to have been used in the car window smash, connecting the men to the jugging crime.

Suspects Charged with Burglary and Conspiracy

The three suspects—32-year-old Jalen Gross, 42-year-old Dennis Earl, and 22-year-old Datavien Arvie—are now facing charges of third-degree burglary and felony conspiracy. Authorities hope these arrests will deter similar criminal activities in the area. "And we’re also hopeful that maybe they’ll tell some of their other bad actors that they may know that you don’t want to come to Oklahoma City to commit this crime," added Weir.

Money Market Street Gang and Broader Investigations

According to Oklahoma City Police, the crime has been linked to the Money Market Street Gang, an organized crime group based in Houston, Texas. Investigations suggest that gang members travel to Oklahoma and other regions to identify and target bank customers in similar fashion.

Police continue to investigate the extent of the group's activities and advise residents to remain cautious, especially when handling cash withdrawals from banks.
