Global Race to Address Critical PHP Vulnerabilities Exposed by AI

Governments and businesses worldwide are scrambling to address two critical vulnerabilities in PHP, one of the most widely used programming languages on the internet, after artificial intelligence-based research uncovered flaws that could potentially impact 70% of all websites.

Immediate Shutdowns and Disruptions

The vulnerabilities, dubbed PHP2Shell, were announced Wednesday and led to several websites and online services experiencing brief outages. The issue, which has persisted undetected in PHP's codebase for over a decade, prompted urgent advisories from the US National Security Agency and Europe’s cybersecurity agency, calling on organizations to swiftly implement security patches.

AI's Role in Uncovering and Addressing the Flaw

The discovery was the result of efforts by teams from OpenAI, Google-owned cybersecurity firm Wiz, and Calif, another cybersecurity company. According to Wiz, exploiting the flaws required advanced techniques previously beyond the practical reach of human researchers. With the help of AI tools—including Google’s Gemini 4 Argon, Wiz Atlas, and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol—researchers adapted and developed new methods, rapidly analyzing and demonstrating how the vulnerabilities could be exploited. This breakthrough marked what Wiz described as an "AI inflection point" in cybersecurity.

Potential Impact on Website Security and Data

The PHP vulnerabilities involve issues with how PHP manages a computer’s memory. If a website request ends unexpectedly, PHP may leave sensitive data in memory that could be accessed or corrupted, exposing passwords or other confidential information. The flaws enable remote code execution, giving attackers the potential to disrupt services or access customer data. Cloudflare, a web infrastructure provider, reported observing millions of exploitation attempts since the vulnerabilities were disclosed.

Nigel Green, CEO of financial advisory firm deVere Group, warned, “With PHP behind such a vast share of the web, the exposure could reach almost everywhere people spend money online.” He highlighted booking platforms, marketplaces, ticketing sites, delivery apps, and utility portals as potentially vulnerable if built on PHP-based systems.

Global Government and Private Sector Response

The PHP Foundation has released a patch and urged website operators to update their systems immediately. Leaders worldwide responded decisively. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called for heightened vigilance and recommended suspending vulnerable services if necessary. Japanese firms, including ANA, JR West, and MUFG, reported temporarily suspending certain online services.

Several European government websites—among them those from France, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands—went offline while security fixes were applied. The UK government reported that nearly three dozen services were down and four partially unavailable during upgrades. Similarly, Ireland’s prominent news outlet The Journal and the Wikimedia Foundation, operator of Wikipedia, took systems offline as a precaution.

Comparisons to Past Cybersecurity Incidents

Experts likened PHP2Shell to the infamous Heartbleed bug from 2014, which enabled cybercriminals to access supposedly protected data and affected as much as two-thirds of the web. While the PHP flaws had existed for years, frontier AI models allowed researchers to exploit and address them far more quickly than ever before, demonstrating a new paradigm in AI-powered cybersecurity.

Organizations have been urged to validate their use of PHP, implement the released patch promptly, and continue monitoring for potential exploits as attackers attempt to capitalize on the vulnerabilities. The incident underscores the growing importance of ai cybersecurity in managing emerging risks across the digital landscape.
