Sequoyah Lady Indians Softball Rallies in Memory of Holli Carnes
The Sequoyah High School Lady Indians softball team experienced a season defined by more than just competition. After the tragic loss of their senior teammate, Holli Carnes, to a car crash on the very day the season began, the team made a heartfelt commitment to honor her memory in every game and especially during their run to the Class 3A fast pitch state tournament in Shawnee.
Commemorating a Fallen Teammate
Throughout the season, the Lady Indians incorporated various tributes to Carnes into their uniforms and team rituals. Players wore towels and wristbands, and displayed stickers on their helmets as symbols of remembrance. This ongoing tribute not only reflected the spirit of the Lady Indians but also unified them as they advanced through the season.
The State Tournament: Competing with Purpose
Sequoyah's journey culminated in Shawnee, where the team competed in the 3A fast pitch softball state tournament. Their performance earned them the state runner-up title, a significant achievement that carried special emotional weight for the team and the community. The Lady Indians honored Carnes with a banner displaying her image, which they held up during the post-tournament ceremonies.
Family Support and Emotional Moments
Holli Carnes's mother, Claudia Carnes, described the challenges the family has faced since her daughter's passing. Claudia, who has spoken minimally with others since the accident on August 11, made her way to Shawnee for the state tournament. While she watched the game from the privacy of her car, her daughters joined the team in their dugout at the championship. After the Lady Indians secured their state runner-up title, they presented the trophy to Holli's sister in a gesture of unity and remembrance.
Reflecting on the impact of her daughter's memory, Claudia Carnes said, "Anytime we can keep her name alive, like keep her in people's minds. Her sisters and her dad and I, that's what we do. We will talk about her all day long. Several of her friends messaged me and some I didn't know very well, on how much they miss her."
A Community Tribute
Honoring Holli Carnes extended beyond just the Lady Indians. Prior to the championship game, the opposing team reached out to ask if they could wear black in memory of Holli, with their student section also donning black as a sign of support. The sense of camaraderie and collective tribute underscored the wide-reaching impact of Carnes’s memory within the fast pitch softball and high school sports community.
A Season to Remember
The Lady Indians’ 2026 season stands as a profound example of how sports teams can unite in tribute during times of loss. Their runner-up finish in the softball state championship was a milestone dedicated wholly to Holli Carnes, embodying the power of teammate remembrance, community, and resilience in high school softball.
